Corinne Novell

Corinne is an experienced junior who specialises in clinical negligence and personal injury claims, particularly those with an international element.

She has a growing practice in group litigation and is currently instructed as a second junior in multiple high-profile and complex mass tort group actions.

Personal Injury

Corinne regularly appears or advises on matters arising out of a wide range of accidents, including in claims brought under the Occupier’s Liability Acts, Highways Act or the CICA scheme. She has a strong paperwork practice across the breadth of personal injury; she drafts statements of case and advises on prospects of success, liability, quantum and limitation.

Corinne is experienced in claims relating to fraud and dishonesty. She has successfully acted (for both Claimants and Defendants) in claims involving allegations of fundamental dishonesty and secures adverse costs orders against unsuccessful parties.

Group Litigation

Corinne has acted in numerous group tortious claims and is familiar with the complexities of litigating on behalf of groups numbering in the 100s and 1000s. She has experience relating to common case management and cases brought under common claim forms.

She has been instructed in group actions brought for product liability, toxic torts, nuisance, personal injury, sexual abuse and military injuries.

International & Travel

Corinne has been instructed both for and against the major tour operators in claims relating to breach of contract for cancellation or postponement of holidays, tours and cruises.

She regularly acts in matters arising from illness and injury abroad, brought under the Package Travel Regulations and both the Athens and Montreal Conventions, as well as in foreign road traffic accidents and claims where the applicable law under Rome II is not English law.

Corinne has also acted in claims related to flight cancellation and delay, including having represented the successful respondents in Lipton v BA Cityflyer Ltd [2024] UKSC 24, a claim concerning compensation under EC Regulation 261/2004 following a pilot’s illness.

Clinical Negligence

Corinne is interested in all areas of clinical negligence and has a growing practice in this field. She has experience in dealing with multi-party claims and non-NHSR Defendants.

Recently, Corinne has been instructed to advise and plead in relation to claims relating to:

  • Delayed diagnoses, including claims arising from cancers and fistulae.
  • Failure to administer aspirin following a first stroke.
  • Lung damage caused by failure to timeously refer.
  • Scarring suffered following negligently performed aesthetic treatments.
  • Surgical error.
  • Birth injuries.
  • Pressure sores.

Abuse

Corinne represents individuals bringing civil claims for psychiatric injury arising from abuse, including sexual abuse, bullying and harassment.

Her recent instructions include those brought against the MoD, the police and various employers for abuse and harassment occurring in the workplace.

Corinne has acted in claims arising out of asbestos exposure, noise-induced hearing loss and cold injuries caused during military service.

Inquests

Corinne accepts instructions to represent parties at inquests, including on a pro bono basis and is eager to develop her practice in this area. She has been involved in numerous inquests and pre-inquest review hearings, including those involving allegations of clinical negligence, industrial disease and personal injury; in particular within clinical and care home settings.

Corinne is well-versed with the relevant authorities in this area. In particular, she is excellent at disproving impecuniosity, winning on arguments relating to intervention offers and getting claims dismissed on the basis of causation arguments.

Insurance

Corinne is familiar with claims arising out of property and construction damage, including those in respect of defective workmanship and flood damage. She is also experienced in actions relating to whether indemnity is extended to a Claimant or an insured, including claims involving the validity of exclusion clauses and the duty of fair presentation.
