Anna specialises in inquests, inquiries, abuse and international law

Anna acts in inquests involving a wide range of healthcare services in the community and in detention. She provides early advice and representation at Pre-Inquest Reviews and is heavily involved in preparation for final hearings. Anna accepts instructions in associated civil claims. Anna is available to advise on judicial review claims relating to inquest procedures and fresh inquests. Recently, her judicial review claim submissions as junior counsel resulted in the pre-action withdrawal of a decision made under Section 13 of the Coroners Act 1988.

Anna has extensive experience in inquiries, including as Second Junior Counsel. She is available for instructions from inquiry legal teams and state and non-state core participants, and to act on non-statutory inquiries and investigations. Please contact her clerks for security clearance details.

In abuse and torture claims, Anna welcomes instructions in cases involving ‘failure to remove’ children, human trafficking, modern slavery, sexual abuse, safeguarding in sports, foreign prisons, and other forms of torture and ill-treatment within the UK and abroad. Her recent cases include advising on Human Rights Act 1998 and negligence claims in sexual abuse and failure to remove cases against public authorities and major institutions.

In international law, Anna is instructed by families and victim groups and is often sought by lead counsel in cases before human rights and diplomatic mechanisms. She is regularly sought by organisations and individuals to provide legal opinions on international human rights law issues. Her results include the repatriation of a British citizen from a foreign prison and the withdrawal of a removal order by a European state to a country where the individual was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a mass trial. Anna specialises in cases engaging issues of due process interferences, torture and ill-treatment, healthcare, consular duties, and the rights to land and natural resources. She is on the International Criminal Court’s ‘List of Assistants to Counsel’, available for instruction by victim and defence teams.

Abuse

Anna welcomes instructions in abuse, torture and Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority claims, and safeguarding in sports matters. She has expertise in issues of human trafficking, modern slavery, sexual abuse and torture. She has acted for a multitude of human trafficking and modern slavery victims in immigration detention cases and CICA claims. Between 2020 and 2022, she led Harrow Law Centre’s ‘Victims of Crime’ department, representing CICA claimants. Her work includes:
